A house on South Willow Street will avoid demolition because of its connection to Kent State. It was moved across the street Monday in order to make way for the new Esplanade extension.

The 110-year-old home originally belonged to May Prentice, one of Kent State’s first female faculty members.

“It seemed fitting to preserve the house because of that significance,” said Emily Vincent, the university’s director of media relations.

Carol Lutz, who came to see the move, lived in the house for 11 years but was never aware of its history.

“It was a beautiful house, it had beautiful woodwork,” Lutz said. “You don’t see that anymore in houses.”

The home has never been used for university housing, unlike others in the area.

South Willow Street resident and Junior English major Ashton Kamburoff has a front row seat to the house moving on Feb. 20. The house, which used to house former Kent faculty member May H. Prentice was moved to help make way for the new University Esplanade, which will connect campus to downtown. Photo by Brian Smith.

“I think it’s great that it’s being saved, because it was in better shape than the surrounding houses,” said Lutz. “It hadn’t been destroyed, it has always been owner-occupied, and a lot of these had been rentals already.”

Seeing the house again brought back a lot of memories for Lutz.

“My daughter was born here in 1980, it’s kind of a special house to me,” said Lutz. “I’m wondering what they’re going to do with it.”

Plans have not been finalized as to how the house will be used.

Mike Fehr, a Kent State marketing alumni and community member, also said preserving the home is a great idea.

“Anytime you can preserve a 100-plus-year-old home, why not,” Fehr said.

The house had to be moved to make way for the Esplanade expansion project.

Construction on the Esplanade, which will be a physical and symbolic link between the city and university, according to Vincent, should be complete the same time as the construction downtown.

“It will allow people from downtown Kent to take advantage of the university,” Vincent said.

Community reactions to the project have been largely positive.

“I think it’s going to be fantastic,” Fehr said. “It will really enhance the entrance to Kent State.”

The news was like a sudden electric shock. One of my favorite golf courses has closed and, barring something extraordinary, won’t open again. It was like losing an old, valued acquaintance. The announcement of the untimely end of Pecan Valley Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas, required only a couple of brief paragraphs in a regional golf magazine. Unhappily, a national publication substantiated the report a week or so later. Pecan Valley was a long, tight layout with large, quick greens over which the 1968 PGA Championship was contested. Smooth-swinging Julius Boros won, beating Arnold Palmer when the King missed a birdie putt on the 72nd hole. I watched it on television. Boros, one of my favorite players because of his unflappable demeanor and quick pace of player, became at age 48 the oldest winner of a major. The sad result, though, was that this was the closest that Arnie ever came to winning the PGA, the only major that eluded him in the quest for the professional Grand Slam. Pecan Valley was built by Press Maxwell, son of the legendary golf course architect Perry Maxwell who designed Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa and Prairie Dunes in Hutchison, Kan. Thinking back it is difficult to fathom that it was 30-plus years ago that three golfing buddies — Stan Knoderer, James (Doc) Keeter and Bob Ames — asked me if I wanted to jump into a recreational vehicle and escape the snow-covered landscape of Southwest Missouri. I accepted the invitation and a week later we set off for wherever we could find green grass rather than snow. None of us expected to travel beyond Dallas, but when we reached the “Big D” there was snow blowing over the highway. At a truck stop in Waco, where there was no snow but a cold north wind, a friendly attendant suggested that we continue to San Antonio. “It’s always warm there,” he said. He was right, at least for that week. We walked 36 holes a day at Willow Springs, Riverside and Breckenridge municipal golf courses before finally getting around to Pecan Valley. The 7,010-yard course was visually intimidating. We played the blue tees, the same ones used in 1968 for the final-round shootout between Boros and Palmer. Every green seemed miles away as we stood on the tees of the par fours. The fives were a mile longer. Still, just walking the fairways where Boros, Palmer, Gene Littler, Don January and Billy Casper trod was exhilarating. My golfing buddies and I made more than a dozen trips to San Antonio. Our groups numbered anywhere from six to 12. Generally, we drove vans or cars, but we flew the last couple of times. Playing Pecan Valley was a highlight of our annual excursion. I can’t remember all of Pecan Valley’s holes or their lengths, but I do recall some of the most memorable challenges. The second hole is where Pecan Valley apparently got its name. Groves of pecan trees bordered the fairway on both sides of this tough, splendid hole that required an uphill approach shot. If you missed the fairway, there was no shot directly to the green because of the trees. The 6th was a long par five that could be reached with a tremendous second shot. But there was a catch. Just over a hill fronting the green was a creek. The sides of the fairway were lined by gnarly trees and tough rough. The hole that drew the most interest over the years was the 18th. A plaque was placed in the rough and trees on the left side of the fairway where Palmer snapped his drive on the final day. The plaque commemorates Arnie’s unbelievable recovery with a three wood, but he missed the putt that would have put him into a playoff. About a decade ago, my wife, Cynthia, and I played Pecan Valley. The condition of the course wasn’t as good as in years past, but it was still a challenging test that conjured up visions of the languid swing of Boros and the powerful slash of Palmer. This fall we discussed returning to San Antonio and playing Pecan Valley again, but had to discard that plan after reading of the demise of the course. I understand that a movement may be afoot to save the Pecan Valley. I hope it is successful. The venue was too good a test in its heyday to warrant being plowed under for a housing development or shopping center. Center Creek schedule The Center Creek Golf Club in Sarcoxie will open its tournament season with a members-only event on May 5. Other tournaments on the schedule are a couples event on June 9, member/guest on July 7, club championship on Aug. 18, couples event on Sept. 29 and a couples-chili event on Nov. 3. Carthage additions Mark Peterson, head pro at Carthage Municipal Golf Course, has announced two additional tournaments for the 2012 schedule. The Carthage Men’s Golf Association Championship is scheduled Sept. 15-16. On Oct. 2 the SMB Lifestyles event will be played.

NETNS Gardening Appeal

1329887419 49 NETNS Gardening Appeal

As a school community, we are looking forward to developing the NETNS school garden over the coming months.  As well as helping children learn about the importance of the living world around them, gardening helps encourage children to lead healthy lives, develops their communication and teamwork skills and promotes active learning.

We have a number of goals that we are working towards and hope to achieve before the close of the school year.

  • Create the NETNS vegetable patch
  • Build a plastic bottle greenhouse
  • To establish a living willow patch (to be used for living willow sculptures in the future)

We would like to ask your assistance by helping us to provide this opportunity to the children.

If you have any gardening supplies or equipment that you would be able to donate to the school then please bring them into school after the mid-term break and leave them in the sign-posted area in the foyer.

Please do not bring in any fertilizers / pesticides. We also ask that any equipment is washed in warm soapy water.

We would encourage as many people as possible to get involved in setting up the garden. If you would like to help out with onsite work please contact David and Karen at .

Pollen unlocks biblical mystery

1329871817 15 Pollen unlocks biblical mystery

Plain old pollen has helped researchers uncover ancient secrets of the garden of the biblical Ramat Rachel, which means Rachel’s Heights in Hebrew. The site is a kibbutz located south of Jerusalem in Israel overlooking Bethlehem and Rachel’s Tomb, and has long been of interest to scientists and archaeologists.

Ramat Rachel was first explored in 1930-1931. In a series of later digs (1959-1962), it was tentatively identified as the biblical Beit Hakerem (Jeremiah 6:1), one of the places from which flaming warning signals were sent to Jerusalem at the end of the First Temple period. The palace was excavated, dated to the reign of Athaliah, and identified as the House of Baal recorded in 2 Kings 11:18.

The site features a grove of 200 olive trees planted on the outskirts of the kibbutz leading up to the Olive Columns, two 33-foot high pedestals topped by live olive trees, the work of Israeli artist Ran Morin. The hotel garden features a sculpture of the biblical matriarch Rachel, who personifies the nation. In the Book of Jeremiah, Rachel is depicted as a woman of large proportions, protecting two children and surveying the horizon as though waiting for others.

Researchers have long been fascinated by the secrets of  Ramat Rachel, the site of the only known palace dating back to the kingdom of biblical Judah. Digs have revealed a luxurious ancient garden with an advanced irrigation system. They could only imagine what the original garden might have looked like in full bloom — until now. For pollen recently recovered in a 2,500-year-old garden has helped reconstruct a paradise of exotic plants, say Tel Aviv University (TAU) researchers.

Using a unique technique for separating fossilized pollen from the layers of plaster found in the garden’s waterways, researchers from TAU have identified what grew in the ancient royal gardens of Ramat Rachel; and based on archaeological clues they have been able to reconstruct the lay-out of the garden.

According to scholars, the garden featured common fig and grapevine, but also included a bevy of exotic plants such as citron and Persian walnut trees. The citron, which apparently emigrated from India via Persia, made its first appearance in the modern-day Middle East in Ramat Rachel’s royal garden.

One of the unique features of Ramat Rahel’s garden is its advanced irrigation system. With no permanent water source at the site, rainwater was cleverly collected and distributed throughout the garden with aesthetic water installations that included pools, underground channels, tunnels, and gutters.

These installations finally allowed researchers to uncover what they had been searching for. After noticing that the channels and pools themselves were coated with plaster, probably due to renovation, the researchers theorized that if the plaster had ever been renewed while the garden was in bloom, pollen could have stuck to the wet plaster, acting as a trap, and dried within it.

While some plaster layers included only typical native vegetation, one of the layers, dated to the Persian period  – the 5th-4th centuries BCE – also included local fruit trees, ornamentals, and imported trees from far-off lands.

Among the unusual vegetation are willow and poplar, which required irrigation in order to grow in the garden; ornamentals such as myrtle and water lilies; native fruit trees including the grape vine, the common fig, and the olive; and imported citron, Persian walnut, cedar of Lebanon, and birch trees.

Researchers theorize that these exotics were imported by the ruling Persian authorities from remote parts of the empire to flaunt the power of their imperial administration. This is the first time that the exact botanical elements have been reconstructed in an ancient royal garden, say the researchers. The botanical and archaeological information they have collected will help them to re-create the garden so that visitors can soon experience the floral opulence of Ramat Rachel that ancient peoples once enjoyed.
